Our brain performs in specific frequency ranges during different phases of our wakefulness and deep sleep.  These can be measured by electroencephalogram (EEG).  These are known as neural oscillation, or brain waves.  We have basically four types of brain waves.  When we are awake and fully alert, our brain functions in the Beta frequency range (13 Hz - 30 Hz).  When we are in Relaxed Wakefulness, our brain waves are Alpha frequency range (8 Hz - 13 Hz).  When we are in deep sleep, our brain wave are in the Theta frequency range (4 Hz - 8 Hz).  When we are unconscious, our brain functions in Delta frequency range (1 Hz - 4 Hz).

Our Sleep can be differentiated into three broad stages:
1.  Wakefulness (Beta frequency range).
2.  Non-REM Sleep (Alpha frequency range - Delta frequency range).
3.  REM Sleep (Alpha frequency range - Theta frequency range).

The REM sleep is the repairing phase of sleep.  If we do not get time to get REM sleep, we wake up feeling tired, fatigued, headaches, and lots and lots of problems due to the damages that have not been repaired.  REM sleep phase starts around 2 - 3 hours after deep sleep starts.  It is when we dream, when our emotions are the strongest, it is when we can PROGRAM our SUBCONSCIOUS MIND.  And, this is the reason, why our early morning dreams (REM stage) always come true… it programs our SUBCONSCIOUS MIND.  If someone dreams an unpleasant early morning dream, we follow some customs to cancel it (telling the water, etc.).  This is nothing but reprogramming the unwanted programming of SUBCONSCIOUS MIND.
